Köln/Cologne, Germany Travel Guide

Köln/Cologne, Germany, Germany Travel Guide

Travelling aboard can be overwhelming for many. Hopefully this Köln/Cologne, Germany travel guide will ensure you see all the major sights and more!

THINGS TO DO:

Dom (Cathedral) – the seat of the Archbishop and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This beautiful gothic cathedral stands in the middle of the city and can be seen from pretty much ever corner. We found it to be a gathering place of sorts similar to the many squares in Spain. Be sure to visit inside as it has some beautiful baroque architecture.

Hohenzollern Bridge– the bridge crossing the Rhine River in Cologne. Also, the home of the love locks. Legend has it throw the keys to the lock in the Rhine and your love will last forever!

**Tip: for the best views of Köln go to the Triangle. It’s an office building across the Rhine and costs 3 euros to get to the top. We didn’t go to the Triangle as we thought the view from across the bridge was amazing.

SchilderGrasse– this is the shopping district you don’t want to miss! From Zara to HM to huge department stores, this area has everything.

Town Hall– historical building housing Cologne city hall.

Schokoladenmuseum or The Chocolate Museum– a fun filled adventure for any chocolate lover. Lindt walks you through the chocolate creation process and provides a variety of samples along the way!

Ludwig Museum – houses some of the trends of modern and contemporary art including Picasso. We spent a couple of hours at the museum.

The Old Fish Market– once upon a time the home of the fish market but now the home of the colorful buildings!

Cologne Central Station– one of the busiest stations I’ve been too but it has a variety of shops and restaurants.

EATS:

Merzenich – one of the most popular bakeries in Cologne. We tried the pound marble cake and it was divine. Something else to try the Almond Pretzel.

1980 Cafe– craving Vietnamese sandwiches (Banh- mi). This is the place to go! Very reasonably priced for lunch or dinner.

Beirut Restaurant– very filling Lebanese cuisine. We tried the schiesch-taouk and it was delicious.

Freddy Schilling– the best burger in Cologne and don’t mind the wait. It’s worth it!

And for my sweet tooth friends, there are tones of gelato places along the streets but we really enjoyed Eis Cafe Breda. We tried the Vanilla Spaghetti ice cream and it was very sweet. We noticed the people in Cologne love their desserts!

ACCOMODATION:

We stayed at the Marriott Köln and it was great. We had a very spacious room and it was within walking distance to all the sites. If you’re staying at the Marriott, ask about their executive lounge which provides breakfast and dinner options along with a complimentary bar. Worth considering!

Marriott Colgone City Centre. Where to stay in Cologne

All in all we enjoyed our stay in Köln/Cologne and would recommend no more than two nights.

I hope my Köln/Cologne, Germany travel guide makes your travel adventures a bit smoother. Happy exploring!

  1. Ohh, I’m making notes of these places. I’m planning a trip to Germany next year and definitely will be adding some of these spots.

  2. Chocolate museum? Yes, please! I’d like to try the almond pretzel too. Definitely gotta remember Cologne, Germany for the food…and everything else!

  3. My best friend lives in Switzerland, and so she’s constantly in Germany since they’re so close and Switzerland is so small. She’s always recommending different things there, but I’m not sure she ever told me that the Lindt factory is there! I love their chocolates (and YES the ones from actual Germany/Switzerland taste different than the ones in America)! This sounds like such an incredible trip!

  4. You’re photos are amazing! This looks like an amazing place! Looks like I need to put this on my travel wish list!

  5. I am dying to go to germany. Old Europe’s architecture and history has always been so intriguing to me. I could spend days in old churches!
